Katerina Gordeeva

b. 1984 · Ukrainian · based in Cancún, Mexico

After more than two decades working in illustration and concept art, she turned to abstract painting as a way of exploring how an inner state can become visible and shared without words.

Working intuitively primarily on silk, she allows color, movement, material, and time to transform an initial impulse as each painting unfolds. Her work is interested in the space where something internal becomes atmosphere.

Selected Works

Settle is a small group of works created in search of a quieter, more grounded feeling. Layers soften brighter colours into denser, mineral-like surfaces, holding both movement and a sense of pause.

Understory

Year
2026

A small body of work that emerged from a quieter, denser emotional space, Understory explores what it means to remain present with what is happening underneath the surface - taking breath after breath without rushing to perform, explain, or become something else.
The title carries a duality: the darker layer beneath the forest canopy, and a story beneath the surface.

The works are shaped by deepened, layered colour and a sense of moving inward.

Thoughts

Thoughts is an ongoing series of small works — a kind of wordless visual diary. It allows me to hold on to ideas, impressions and states that catch my attention before they disappear or grow into something larger.

Shifting Streams

Year
2025

Shifting Streams developed through layers, returning to the same paintings over time and allowing different states to accumulate, soften and transform. For me, these layers hold both the weight of what is happening and a sense of movement through it - always leaving space to breathe.

Becoming

Year
2025

Becoming marks an early period of finding my way into abstraction. Moving away from recognizable forms, I began exploring how something felt or experienced could be held in colour, movement and form.

Each work became a different attempt at finding that language.
